He has worked at Zhongshan Hospital, Fudan University, Shanghai, China, as a chief physician in general surgery since graduating in 1990. In 2001 and 2004, he went to Massachusetts General Hospital and Ambroise Paré Hospital (Paris Medical School) for further study. Over the last 31 years, Prof. Xu has focused his scientific interests on gastrointestinal cancer, especially in basic research and clinical treatment of colorectal cancer and liver metastasis. He has established a standardized treatment of early diagnosis and therapy, developed minimally invasive surgery via Da Vinci robotic and laparoscope, discovered some new molecular targets and is exploring their molecular mechanism, trained more than 20 postgraduate students, edited 5 books, published 112 SCI journal papers as first or corresponding author (including but not limited to J Clin Oncol, Ann Surg, Clinical cancer research and INT J CANCER), and edited/reviewed for more than 10 academic journals including serving as deputy editor of Onco Targets and Therapy. Dr Xu drafted the Chinese Guidelines for Diagnosis and Comprehensive Treatment of Hepatic Metastasis of Colorectal Cancer, Expert Consensus of Robotic Surgery in Colorectal Cancer (2015 edition), and Robotic Surgery Guideline of National Health and Family Planning Commission (NHFPC) as an expert group leader. "Multidisciplinary comprehensive treatment for colorectal liver Metastasis" won second in the 2015 National Science and Technology Progress Award and first in the Scientific and Technological Progress Award by the Ministry of Education and Shanghai.
